On February 25, 1998, at the Grammy Awards in New York City, Luciano Pavarotti was scheduled to perform his signature aria “Nessun Dorma” but fell ill just hours before the show. Aretha Franklin, a close friend of Pavarotti, was asked to step in after impressing producers at a MusiCares dinner two nights earlier.
The last time she sang it was at the World Meeting of Families for Pope Francis on his visit to Philadelphia in September 2015.
